Povestea locului

Porolissum was an ancient Roman city in Dacia. The old Roman city Porolissum at the edge of Dacia became the capital of Roman province Dacia Porolissensis in 124, when in 106 a military camp settled here. Traian established a strengthened point for supervising the main passing through Carpathians. The initial fort was built of wood and later was enlarged and rebuilt of stone. Around the fort a civil settlement expanded. On Hadrian's time it became the administrative centre of Dacia Porolissensis province and during King Septimius Severus's time it received town statute. Although the Romans withdrew from Dacia in 271 under Aurelian reign, the city was inhabited for centuries. Archeologists began diggings in 1970 and they discovered the Roman camp remains, defense towers, military activities, bathing places, temple, amphitheatre, paved roads and inhabited houses. One of the stone wall's gate of the fort was rebuilt, porta praetoria.

Despre
